Interactive Classrooms for Teaching and Learning

Interactive Classrooms for distance teaching and learning allow teachers, students and institutions to be linked together in a powerful network so that information and expertise can be exchanged with ease. Such classrooms make extensive use of information and communications technologies and human resources in the processes of teaching and learning. They allow for interactive use of various media such as TV, radio, cable and satellite and relatively new capabilities such as videoconferencing, the Internet, academic networks and multimedia resources.

Telepresence as a guide to Learning!

Importantly, interactive classrooms also offer 'telepresence' - the feeling of being present in a classroom with a teacher and other students where there is considerable opportunity for human intellectual and social interaction during the teaching and learning process.

A Practical Guide to Building and Using Interactive Classrooms in YOUR institution!

This handbook provides step-by-step guidelines for designing, building and using interactive classrooms - tailored to specific needs - which promote telepresence with audio-visual technologies such as videoconferencing and television as the main means of communication.

This handbook is the main outcome of a Pan-European project entitled "Blueprint for Interactive Classrooms," supported under the Telematics Applications Programme (Education and Training) of the European Commission (DGXIII) which included partners from Universities in 5 different European countries. This research and development project which extends from 1996 to 1999 has resulted in the building of pilot classrooms in the participating universities and in the gathering of considerable practical expertise which has been included in this handbook.
